Fortune to cut number of printed issues

October 22nd, 2009

Shira Ovide of The Wall Street Journal reports that Fortune magazine plans to cut the number of issues every year to 18 from 25, and will have some layoffs later.

Ovide writes, “It will focus more deeply on fewer topics and add new columns to help business professionals do their jobs more effectively. It will have a cleaner, less cluttered look and an upgraded Web site.

“Executives said Fortune needs to concentrate on what it does best, and cut costs amid the downturn in print media.

“‘We’re not blind to the realities of the business,’ said Fortune managing editor Andy Serwer. ‘This is the best model for this magazine in terms of profitability and editorial product.’”
